I’m sorry that you experienced childhood assault, but that wasn’t racism. I’m not saying that the Pakistani kid didn’t have racial prejudice against you (disliked you because you’re white), or that they weren’t a bully.

I’m saying that racism is more than just racial prejudice. It’s racial prejudice PLUS the ability to codify that prejudice in ways that negatively impact nonwhite people as a group.

Your childhood bully may have grown up into an adult bully, but he still doesn’t have the power to codify that prejudice. Every Pakistani in America could hate every white person in America, but they couldn’t make the majority of American TV shows reflect Pakistani culture and values. They couldn’t make our next 44.5 presidents Pakistani-Americans. They couldn’t start printing federal forms in English and Urdu. They couldn’t present a version of history in American schoolbooks that painted Pakistanis as heroes and white people as savages and criminals.

That’s racism.
